About Rupert's Ridge

Vines with a view

Rupert’s Ridge Estate Vineyard is a boutique winery in the picturesque winegrowing region of Heathcote, Victoria and was established John and Chris Gillies Williams in 2003.

Named after their longtime canine companion, Rupert’s Ridge is a 100 acres of heaven which sits atop the rolling hills at Redesdale. Approximately 100kms from Melbourne where you can walk out the door and see forever no houses, just peace and quiet.

What began as an escape to the country for two successful corporate executives has turned into a passion for vine growing and a new way of life. Starting with a blank sheet of grass they personally researched and planted the vineyard from scratch. They are now looking down with satisfaction at their vineyards that span more than 10 acres.

For the team at Rupert’s Ridge, every day is a new discovery and a new experience. Both Gillies and Williams started this venture with little to no knowledge of viticulture or winemaking, but solid research and hard work has resulted vines that produce superior quality fruit.

Alan Cooper of Cobaw Ridge Fame has been mentor from day one. In addition, the extraordinary amount of knowledge shared by fellow grape growers in the region has helped to shape Rupert’s Ridge into what it is today.

Three short years after establishing their vineyard, Rupert’s Ridge released its first limited edition 2006 Estate Shiraz, which received 93 points from industry expert James Halliday. This recognition was testament to the dedication and achievement of Chris and John’s dream – and a sure sign of great things to come from the Estate.

Unfortunately, devastation struck in 2009 when the Victorian bushfires ripped through the property, destroying the house, shed, equipment, and fences, along with approximately 1500 vines. The good news was that no one was hurt and most of the vines have survived due to the fast action of 150 friends and community members who came to save the vineyard. Over three days they removed all the melted nets, dropped most of the crop to reduce vine stress and repaired 16 kilometres of irrigation to get water to the parched vines.

Today, it it’s hard to imagine the devastation of 2009, the vines recovered very quickly with some expert care and pruning. The pig shed that survived the fire became is now a luxury dog friendly retreat (possibly the only 4.5 star pig shed accommodation around these parts!). Olives almonds, figs and fruit trees blend into the park style gardens of the property.

Whether you’re stopping by the winery for a quick tasting (by appointment) or a weekend away, you can become a Friend of Rupert’s Ridge, and keep in touch with Chris and John as they grow and develop Rupert’s Ridge.
